Word Scribbler Reading Challenge - Week 14 - A book written by a UK author

Week 14 of my 52 book reading challenge (1 book per week for a year) is A book written by a UK author. My chosen book this week is also this year's pick for Cityread London. This is an annual event every April where everyone in London (residents and visitors) is encouraged to read the same book. You can read more about Cityread London here .

Book blurb - Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch

Probationary Constable Peter Grant dreams of being a detective in London's Metropolitan Police. Too bad his superior plans to assign him to the Case Progression Unit, where the biggest threat he'll face is a paper cut. But Peter's prospects change in the aftermath of a puzzling murder, when he gains exclusive information from an eyewitness who happens to be a ghost. Peter's ability to speak with the lingering dead brings him to the attention of Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale, who investigates crimes involving magic and other manifestations of the uncanny. Now, as a wave of brutal and bizarre murders engulfs the city, Peter is plunged into a world where gods and goddesses mingle with mortals and long-dead evil is making a comeback on a rising tide of magic.

Word Scribbler Reading Challenge - Week 13 - A memoir

Every book in my reading challenge so far has been a fiction book. This week is non-fiction week. Week 13 of my 52 book reading challenge (1 book per week for a year) is A Memoir / autobiography.

As a writer myself I am reading the memoir of a writer, the extremely successful and popular Stephen King.

Book blurb - On Writing by Stephen King

Part memoir, part master class by one of the bestselling authors of all time, this superb volume is a revealing and practical view of the writer's craft, comprising the basic tools of the trade every writer must have. King's advice is grounded in his vivid memories from childhood through his emergence as a writer, from his struggling early career to his widely reported, near-fatal accident in 1999 - and how the inextricable link between writing and living spurred his recovery.

As well as this I am also reading a fiction book this week. This is not part of my reading challenge below, although this would fit in many weeks as it's a book made into a movie and a book by one of my favourite authors. Just in time for the movie release I am reading The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks.

Book blurb - The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks

Two couples. Two love stories. One epic tale

Ninety-one-year-old Ira Levinson is in trouble. Struggling to stay conscious after a car crash, an image of his adored - and long-dead - wife Ruth appears. Urging him to hang on, she lovingly recounts the joys and sorrows of their life together: how they met, the dark days of WWII and its unrelenting effect on their families.

A few miles away, college student Sophia Danko's life is about to change when she meets the young, rugged Luke and is thrown into a world far removed from her privileged school life. Sophia sees a tantalising future for herself, but Luke is keeping a secret that could destroy it all.

Ira and Ruth. Sophia and Luke. Two couples, separated by years and experience, whose lives are about to converge in the most unexpected - and shocking - of ways.

Book blurb:

Every day a different body. Every day a different life. Every day in love with the same girl.

There’s never any warning about where it will be or who it will be. A has made peace with that, even established guidelines by which to live: Never get too attached. Avoid being noticed. Do not interfere.

It’s all fine until the morning that A wakes up in the body of Justin and meets Justin’s girlfriend, Rhiannon. From that moment, the rules by which A has been living no longer apply. Because finally A has found someone he wants to be with—day in, day out, day after day.

Word Scribbler Reading Challenge - Week 12 - A book with 'Spring' in the title

Do you love (YA/NA/Adult) romance novels? Who's your favourite fictional romantic lead character?

The clocks have now gone forward an hour and it's officially Spring. Week 12 of my 52 book reading challenge (1 book per week for a year) is A book with 'Spring' in the title.

Book blurb - Promises of Spring by Jenny Lane

Sophie Burnett is ready for a new start.
She had fallen head over heels for Brett, a fellow teacher at the school were she worked.
But he suddenly broke up with her, saying he was getting back with his ex-girlfriend.
Unable to face seeing him everyday, Sophie quit her job, and since then she has been temping through an agency.
She needs to find something permanent but she doesn’t know where to look.
She decides to help out her elderly Aunt Rose who lives alone in Kent.
And reluctantly, she finds herself being drawn into village affairs.

Keir Ellison, Rose’s very attractive neighbour, is heavily involved in plans for a Craft Centre, but there is much opposition from the older residents who have different ideas for the old chapel.
Sophie is attracted to Keir, but soon realises he's a man of mystery.

Can she trust him?
Or is she heading for heartbreak once again?

‘Promises of Spring’ is a touching story about love, friendship and new beginnings. It is perfect for fans of Hilary Boyd and Jojo Moyes.
